Will you need to strip the current material off my roof?
Most likely not. The Hy-Grade steel roofing system is designed to be installed over the existing roof. In most cases, the existing roof does not need to be stripped saving time and associated costs. This also means no materials, like asphalt shingles, are dumped in the landfill. Read how this helps make a Hy-Grade Steel roof environmentally-friendly HERE
Will a steel roof be noisy in rain and hail?
Not any more noisy than your current roof. We strap and install our materials over the existing shingles creating an extra noise barrier. The strapping system creates a 6-8 cm gap between your existing roof and the Hy-Grade roof shakes. Along with providing important, energy-saving ventilation, the gap affords sound attenuation. Many Hy-Grade customers actually report less noise heard inside the house during rain and hail storms.
Will wind or hail damage my steel roof?
A Hy-Grade Steel Roof is engineered to withstand all facets of Ontario’s harsh weather conditions. Our roofing system is very strong and durable. It’s made with 26-guage, G-90 galvanized Canadian-made steel and coated with 4 mils thick PVC coating that’s elastic enough to expand and contract with the steel. Our system is tested to withstand sustained winds of up to 120 km/h. That’s hurricane level winds! It will not crack, chip, peel or lift when struck by hail or heavy winds.
Will a steel roof attract lightning?
Steel roofs do not attract lightning any more than other roof types. In fact, should your Hy-Grade Roof be hit by lightning, it may be safer than traditional roofing materials. A steel roof is non-combustible, so it will not burn if struck by lightning.
Can a Hy-Grade Steel Roof be put on an older home?
Absolutely! Due to the light weight of a steel roof, a “tear-off” of the existing roof is not necessary. Regardless of your home’s age, our steel roof can compliment your home’s overall look and increase its curb appeal. Ask your local Roofing Consultant to see pictures of the different types of homes we’ve installed our roof on. We have over 15,000 examples on many different kinds of buildings!
Will a Hy-Grade Steel Roof add value to my home?
It will! Both the aesthetic and market value of your home is sure to increase in value. More and more homeowners are telling us that their home sold faster and at a higher price because of their decision to install a Hy-Grade Steel Roofing System. Read more about this in our benefits of steel roofing article HERE
How long does it take to install a Hy-Grade Roof?
There are so many factors that go into this, it’s impossible for us to give a firm answer. Installation time can vary by roof size, pitch, components, crew size, crew speed, etc. On an average sized home with average pitch and components, most installations are completed within 3-5 days. You are receiving a complete roofing system with many non-visible engineered components below the steel shakes. It is more labour intensive than other roofing options, but also lasts much, much longer!
Is there a choice of colours?
Our system is available in 7 colours including Dark Brown, Black, Slate Grey, Hunter’s Green, Canner’s Brown, Charcoal Grey and Tile Red. Check out examples of each colour in our Gallery HERE or upload a photo of your home HERE to see digitized version of what our roof would look like on your home. You’re sure to find a colour that is perfect for your home and preferences!
How much does a Steel Roof cost?
Some steel roofs are cost comparable to asphalt shingles, whereas others are more aligned with slate or tile roofing. It’s important to note that you will save money over time by purchasing a steel roof. In the same 50 Year warranty period of a permanent Hy-Grade Steel Roof you might end up replacing your traditional asphalt roof 3-4 times. With increasing roofing material and labour costs, you could end up paying much more than if you’d just invested in a steel roof from the beginning.
